Football Bento

Football Bento | OneCraftyThing.com

One Crafty Thing… if you’ve ever wondered what the name was about, it’s about doing one thing, just one crafty thing whenever you get the time. I’ve been out of time lately, so the bentos have been few and far between (the lunches are being prepared, just “plain” lunches though — sandwiches that look like… well, sandwiches). But lately I’ve been getting more inspired. It’s Superbowl season and it’s here in my hometown this year, so it’s been EVERYWHERE! So after being bombarded with football everything for weeks, I suddenly had the bright idea to make a football bento (admittedly, it’s like thinking up a Mickey Mouse lunch in Disneyland, so sue me!) Anyhow, I made this for my youngest kiddo (preschool kiddo!) and he loved it.

In today’s lunch:

Main  PB&J football cut with a simple circle cutter and using crust for laces
Sides Almonds painted to look like footballs and mandarins with football post food picks
Also included but not pictured Cheese stick and water

Football Kick-Off Watermelon

Football Kick Off Watermelon | OneCraftyThing.com

I want to start this post with a disclaimer: I know NOTHING about football. All I know is that I was invited to some kind of football party last Sunday and I wasn’t sure what exactly was going on. I did know it wasn’t Superbowl (where last year I did a helmet watermelon!), but that it was something important. Turns out it was the beginning of football season. For me, that means one thing: a chance to do a football-themed watermelon 🙂 And this one is SUPER simple; I’m sure anyone could do it. I basically just cut the water in half, length-wise. With the extra rind, I cut out a football shape and carved some lines to make it look like a football. The goal posts are 3 paper straws that were hot-glued together and then stuck into the opposite sides of the rind. That’s all! I added grapes, blueberries, cantaloupe, and watermelon, of course. It was a cute centerpiece for a laid-back party. I do think it could possibly do for Superbowl too!

What I used:

Superbowl Sunday

football

Ahh Superbowl Sunday. A day I will never, ever understand. I have very little idea of what goes on in football and really, barely know who’s playing. However, some friends are having a Superbowl party (with bouncy house!) and you say potluck and helmet, well, gee, I gotta think watermelon fruit tray. So here is my one big tribute to Superbowl Sunday… a watermelon helmet.

Note: This watermelon helmet is nowhere near the size it would be in the summer. It’s probably the size of a (ironically) soccer ball, which is as big as watermelons get around here, apparently, in the winter. Fortunately, though, it was pretty sweet still.

Update: An awesome video tutorial by the National Watermelon Board, right here! Written instructions here.
