A little Easter Bento

It’s been a while since I made a bento… not for not wanting, just for prioritizing other crafts. I’m currently painting in watercolor and learning how to illustrate in a couple of different syles, and working on my handlettering. So throwing together lunches has been… let’s say last minute 😉 But it’s the beginning of spring break for the kids so we kicked it off with a fun little lunch.

In today’s lunch:

Main Grapes and an apple “sandwich”– Apple slices with peanut butter in between. Also, a bunny Easter egg filled with a little treat (Egg shaped M&Ms).
Sides Pistachios with M&M “eggs” and veggie sticks
Also included but not pictured Water

Simple and Fast Valentine

Valentine’s day is a “required” day for bentos at my house… hearts and love is always appreciated at lunch. However, pressed for time, I was having a bit of a hard time getting a lunch together this morning. Finally, a very quick, quite simple Valentine lunch was the answer and this all took 7 minutes. We even got to school on time.

In today’s lunch:

Main PB&J triple stacked heart sandwich. I used a heart-inside-a-heart cookie cutter to shape it. Since it produced a small sandwich, I made it triple stacked. Also, because I had some extra bread left, I cut another set of sandwiches (half of the heart) and made it look like there were two hearts with one in front of the other. Inside the box, craisins with yogurt covered raisins.
Sides A mandarin with a heart and large globe grapes
Also included but not pictured Yogurt and water

A (Quick, Inexpensive, Adorable) Winter Wreath

Every once in a while, I take a little bento hiatus. I take a break so that I can come up with new and fresh ideas. However, I still have to craft… one crafty thing! So this week, I checked out some wreaths on Pinterest and I made a new wreath for my door. Something simple, something that took less than a half hour and less that $12! Can you say instant (and cheap) gratification?

For this wreath, I used:

A ready-made grapevine wreath. $4 at Trader Joe’s
Basil-colored Spanish moss. $4.50 (40% off at my local craft store, or buy it online).
7 white “snow” flocked trees in a pack. $2.99 (40% off at my local craft store)
(Optional) Green acrylic paint in case your moss isn’t as green as you would like. (99 cents)

15 minutes: I originally had the idea to hot glue the moss onto the wreath, but instead, I ended up tucking it into the branches. It held pretty well without the glue. I especially tried to tuck it under the largest branches.

Lots of mess, but easily swept away. It might not seem that way but this moss held pretty well like this.

10 minutes: I took my time hot gluing the trees into the wreath (partially because I was watching TV, but partially because I was trying to lay them out before I glued for sure). They each have a little wood base so I hot glued the base to where I wanted and then flexed the tree “trunks” (made of wire) to make them straight, even though gluing them on a curve meant that the bases didn’t go in straight. I tried to not line them up but instead have some in front, some in back so that I could create a bit of depth.

2 minutes: I had a bit of trouble figuring out how to hang this up but then thought of using a split key ring on the back and then hung it up.

And that was it 🙂 It took 3 extra minutes to clean up. It was fun and cute and looks good on my door. I didn’t end up using the paint as I liked the color of the moss, but using a sponge brush to lightly add green might give the moss more depth.

Dr. Seuss Day Bento

Today is Dr. Seuss Day (AKA National Read Across America Day) and the kiddo’s favorite Dr. Seuss book is One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish and one of her favorite characters is the (unnamed) girl. She’s having a fun school Read Across America event at school today (with pillow and blanky and stuffed animal) so I thought this would be appropriate!

In this lunch:

Main PB&honey with the girl from One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish painted on. TIP! It’s actually pretty hard to paint on a piece of bread because of all the holes in the bread (even harder with healthier, chunkier bread), so I make it a double sandwich, using a two regular slices of bread and having the top one (the third piece) slightly flattened by a roller, just enough to make it a little more dense and flatten out the holes, so then when it’s painted, you don’t have inconsistencies in the painting.
Sides Goldfish crackers (one painted to be a red fish and the second, a blue fish) and half an apple carved with the “To There, To Here” sign from the book; it was outlined with the black dye.
Also included but not pictured Applesauce and an orange.
