Spirit Week Bentos!

This last week has been spirit week at school for the kiddo. I usually only do one fun lunch a week (she gets a very simple bento type lunch every day with sandwich and fruit, cheese, yogurt, etc.), but there were all kinds of fun activities for spirit week so I added a couple of extra fun lunches into the mix. The first one below was for the end-of-the-year field trip to a bowling alley, one for mustache day, and one for Disney day.

Bowling Bento Lunch | OneCraftyThing.com

The “real” fun bento lunch was this one, just for this field trip. In this lunch:

Main A bowling ball PB&J with a crust end on top to give the bowling ball some color. Bowling pin cheese stick (with bowling pin drawn in Sharpie)
Sides Blueberries with a star-shaped cheddar slice (I was going to put the word strike! but it was too long to fit) and a 10. Green grapes with two baby carrots that I carved into pins.
Also included but not pictured Yogurt.

Mustache Bento Lunch | OneCraftyThing.com

A fun lunch, but much simpler. In this lunch:

Main A set of three little mustache PB&J mini-sandwiches.
Sides Strawberries with a little candy mustache, baby carrots with a little mustachioed friendly pick.
Also included but not pictured Yogurt and string cheese.

Disney Minnie Mouse Bento Lunch | OneCraftyThing.com

Another fun but simple lunch for Disney day! In this lunch:

Main A PB&J Minnie Mouse decorated with cherries for her bow.
Sides Blueberries on bow picks, cherries with a cherry pick.
Also included but not pictured Yogurt and string cheese.

Sheriff Callie Bento Lunch

Sheriff Callie Bento Lunch | OneCraftyThing.com

Once in a while, my middle kiddo (who usually gets her wonderfully balanced lunch from preschool) stays home and asks for a special lunch. So, seeing as she wants to be a sheriff when she grows up, a Sheriff Callie lunch (who is her favorite) was in order. I’ve been wanting to make it for a while but it’s too young for the older kiddo. Anyway, to the details!

In today’s lunch:

Main PB sandwich Callie. I used green candy covered sunflower seeds for eyes (lined with black food dye and finished with a white non-pareil highlight) and a heart sprinkle for a nose. The muzzle was just a little oval and the patches on her face are peanut butter (the gray parts are peanut butter with a tiny bit of black food dye).
Sides Carrots with a sheriff star and strawberries with a food pick to resemble the cactus, Toby with little carrot hat.
Also included but not pictured Yogurt and string cheese.

Rain, Rain Come and Stay Bento

Rain, Rain, Come and Stay Bento | OneCraftyThing.com

Normally at this point in the year, rain is the last thing anyone wants to see. But when your state is in major drought, every single drop counts. Today it looks like rain! But it’s doubtful it will actually rain 🙁 So to encourage the weather, a little rain cloud and sky scene for lunch.

In today’s lunch:

Main PB&J cloud mini sandwiches. I don’t have a large cloud cutter, so I made this one out of small circles. They break apart into mini sandwiches. The trick is to start with one circle, then cut the one next to it with the same cutter so that it fits into the other. Keep going and five mini sandwiches later, voila! Eyes are made from chocolate chips with a non-pareil highlight and the mouth is a little bit of candy string. The rain drops from the cloud (and his happy tear) are candy coated sunflower seeds.
Sides Blueberry sky with white sprinkle stars and an artichoke dip moon (in a mini silicone cup) with black sprinkles and candy string for a face. Surrounding it are Pasta Chips for dipping.
Also included but not pictured Yogurt and string cheese.

May the 4th: A Lunch From the Dark Side

Sith Lord Star Wars Bento Lunch | OneCraftyThing.com
As is my custom on May the 4th, a Star Wars bento for the kiddo 🙂  Today, it’s one from the Darkside… Sith lord themed. Beware the Dark Side! They have cookies 🙂

In this lunch:

Main PB&J Darth Vader Sandwiches and a Darth Maul strawberry (on the back of a Darth Vader Easter egg), with details done with black edible dough (and yellow sprinkle eyes). I made his horns out of peanuts (cut them to points with a sharp paring knife.
Sides Trail mix with the front of the Darth Vader Easter egg (front) and large purple grapes.
Also included but not pictured Yogurt and pasta chips with brie.

Beauty and the Beast Bento

Beauty and the Beast Bento | OneCraftyThing.com
Beauty and the Beast is the kiddo’s favorite Disney movie, so today’s theme is Beauty and the Beast! I had plans to figure a way to sculpt out a Beast face out of the kiwi but that would have added a load of time to this lunch! I’ll admit that the painting was difficult because the kiwi is so juicy that the water-based food dye that I used to paint started to smudge a bit but I think it will make it to lunch. We will see! 🙂

In this lunch:

Main A PB&J “Book” sandwich and a banana with Belle carved on it
Sides The Beast is painted onto a kiwi and I used a tiny bit of white edible dough for his teeth. I also included a red rose made from a strawberry on a blueberry background.
Also Included but not Pictured Yogurt and mozarella

A Toy Story Bento

A Toy Story Bento | OneCraftyThing.com
In this lunch:

Today, the kiddo asked what she was going to get for a special lunch and I decided to surprise her. Truth was, I had absolutely NO idea what to do. I was inspiration-less! And suddenly I looked into the toy, um, pile and saw a Mr. Potato Head sticking out. And so this lunch was inspired by my kiddos’ mess. At least it’s good for something!

Main PB&J sandwich with PB as on the face as well. The black parts (mustache, eyebrows, pupils) are all pieces of blueberries except for the bowler hat (that was wilton dough). Ears were slices of mandarins and eyes were made up of bread. The mouth was a small piece of raspberry.
Sides A green alien kiwi. I used a full kiwi and held it in place with the silicone cup. The ears are cut up pieces of kiwi (with the skin on, for rigidity) and the little antenna on his head is a piece of kiwi topped with a skinned blueberry on top. In the next compartment, some Pirate Booty with cheddar stars.
Also Included but not Pictured Yogurt and a string cheese.

Into the Woods… and Home Before Dark!

Into the Woods Bento | OneCraftyThing.com

Another beloved movie! I saw Into the Woods in a play as a teenager and I instantly loved it. I loved the tongue-in-cheekness, I loved the characters, I loved the less-than-happy ending. Loved. When Disney put it out this last year, I took my husband out on a date to see it. It was great! I talked about it so much that my kiddos started to want to see it, and they saw it with their grandma. They loved it, too! One soundtrack and many many many repeats later, it’s the only album the whole family can agree on in the car. So when the kiddo asked me for an Into the Woods lunch, I had to do it!

This lunch was inspired by the Witch’s curse which needs to resolve itself through:

One: the cow as white as milk,
Two: the cape as red as blood,
Three: the hair as yellow as corn,
Four: the slipper as pure as gold.

In this lunch:

Main A cream cheese sandwich (by request) in the shape of Milky White– in this particular lunch, I guess it helped that my child will only eat white bread (booooo!).
Sides The cape as red as blood (or as red as a strawberry) with a little bread face. I used sprinkles for the eyes and mouth and a few peels of blueberry for the hair. For Little Red Riding Hood’s dress, I cut up a little piece of cupcake liner! Also included was a banana with the hair as yellow as corn, and a piece of bread shaped like a foot and painted with yellow paint for the slipper as pure as gold (over a mix of nuts). Also, two little trees with blueberry leaves.
Also Included but not Pictured Yogurt

Big Hero 6 Bento

Big Hero 6 Bento | OneCraftyThing.com

With Big Hero 6 out on DVD, my kiddos have been watching it over and over again. I personally haven’t seen it (erm, I’ve used it as a babysitter while making dinner, though!) but I caught enough here and there to make up a lunch based on the characters. So here we go, a Big Hero 6 lunch!

In this lunch:

Main Not a sandwich for once! My grandma has a recipe for no-syrup pancakes which is great for lunch, as there is no mess. They are only very slightly sweet and taste good with a little butter (although I didn’t add butter here). So a set of Baymax pancakes (so easy to make!)
Sides Lol, a mini sandwich (PB&J of course)– I painted Hiro’s face on it; blueberries with a suited up Baymax made from a couple of strawberries, a bit of bread and a teensy bit of food dye– kept together with peanut butter.
Also Included but not Pictured Bunny graham crackers

A Simple St. Patrick’s Day Bento

Simple St. Patrick's Day Bento Lunch | OneCraftyThing.com

I was trying to figure out what I was going to do for St. Patrick’s Day’s lunch and thought up a few different themes. In the end, I decided to go really simple clover themed (with a couple of extra goodies in there!). I just love when a simple lunch comes together and practically anyone can make this!

In this lunch:

Main A PB&J heart sandwich with a cut out clover. The green under the cut out was a small spot of peanut butter with some green food dye. I cut out the clover with a tiny heart cutter.
Sides Trail mix with two little chocolate coins and green grapes cut into hearts (and held together with a toothpick) and arranged like a clover. The grape-clover sits on top of a piece of lettuce, but there are more grapes under that.
Also Included but not Pictured Yogurt and a banana

The Day After Grammar Day Bento: Conjunction Junction

Conjunction Junction Bento | OneCraftyThing.com

Yesterday, it was National Grammar Day. It’s a nerd-like-me’s dream day! Unfortunately, I had to leave my house super early yesterday and had to work the night before, so I didn’t get a chance to make a Grammar Day lunch for the kiddo. So today I made up for it. It’s sad that it won’t be for Grammar Day… but then again, grammar is good all year round 🙂

In this lunch:

Main  PB& J AND cream cheese mini sandwiches (see the conjunction?) with cheddar cheese words
Sides Carved banana with the Conjunction Junction engineer on it, kiwi go sign and a couple of mandarins
Also Included but not Pictured Yogurt and a string cheese
